Because our brain is an association machine, kind of like artificial intelligence, using specific words are more effective than others. In NeuralPlan we look to research to inform us on how asking the right question with the right frame can completely flip the project outcome for the better.
If you do risk planning before schedule planning, or vice versa, the accuracy of the plan changes, due to psychological association in the brain. The Anchoring Effect bias causes the brain to associate its decisions with recent data its heard, making the sequence crucial to an executable plan.
The brain gathers information in a less logical way than we think. As we are planning, the future executability of the project hinges on what occurs in our thinking and how each process is detailed.
To make projects more executable within schedule and budget, we can design our processes, metrics, interfaces (such as software), and skills around the way we think. Sometimes we can make improvements without even having to teach people about human behavior. We just design for better cognition!
Issues like time pressure, cognitive load, decision fatigue, psychological safety, and much more, impact how much information gets through to our brain. And as you may know, an executable plan requires information to make good decisions. But if the information is getting through, we have to design the environment to enable data to come through. The brain cannot process information it does not have.
It depends! Much of the performance reporting we do does not add a lot of value. Because the brain needs decision-data to take better action, performance reporting should be tweaked to enhance our thinking, not cloud it with noise. The frequency of feedback, when we get the feedback (quantitative or qualitative), and how much cognitive load is in that feedback, all impact how effective our reporting is and if it adds value or is actually counterproductive to project success.
The person that facilitates the planning or forecasting is more important than we think; almost pivotal. Research shows we plan our own work more optimistically than others. Furthermore, advanced organizations that use earned value and other schedule metrics can have insights into reliability that can be used to diagnose the organization for better planning accuracy, resulting in accelerated project delivery.
Not only do all the things mentioned above impact executable plans, but they also share common attributes with risky decision-making and safety. The design of our processes and environment are not only pivotal to success, but their are organizational culture issues than cause bad project outcomes from issues like organizational silence, strategic misrepresentation, and more.

Dr. Shari De Baets, NPPQ
Dr. Shari De Baets is coauthor of NeuralPlan with expertise in how our decisions affect project success and prediction. With a doctorate in Applied Economics and a deep interest in behavioral science, she explores how our thinking can lead projects astray and what we can do about it. Dr. De Baets is passionate about helping students see projects in a new light and use scientific methods to improve their work. Her practical approach to teaching makes her a valuable mentor for those looking to navigate the complexities of project management.

I highly recommend this program for those who want to understand how the human brain supports. - and sometimes thwarts - the best laid plans! Discover how to adjust our methods of planning to take account of the way brains work. Leverage our natural tendencies instead of tripping over them. Project management processes are essential and have been well-established over the past 50+ years. Now it is time to adapt those techniques for who we as humans really are!
Lena Remy, NPPQ
I now have project managers on my program raising risks in the risk log.
We really shifted to ‘identifying risks is a good thing!’
Dr Mark Reeson, NPPQ
The NeuralPlan Certification course grabbed my interest immediately, simply because as a Project Professional, I understand the key aspect to project delivery is people. Through taking the course, it has allowed me not only to increase my own self-awareness through a reflective process of learning but to also understand why others behaviour differ in certain changing circumstances.
Joshua Cunio, DBA-PM
As a practitioner, I would have never gave any real thought to understanding the behavioral or cognitive aspects of project management, other than those associated with communication or relationship building. However, as a recent graduate of a doctoral program, I have learned a lot about evidence-based practices and decisions in business. In discussing this with mentors and colleagues, I was introduced to NeuralPlan and their mission to bridge the behavioral and cognitive with project management practices. During my doctoral studies, I became intrigued with what studies have found in project management in various aspects and learning about NeuralPlan highly intrigued me. I have just started the NPPQ course and I am already sucked in and I am excited to gain a deeper understanding and gain a new perspective on how project management practices can be viewed and improved!
Shane Kinman, NPPQ
After just completing this certification training and gaining a truly powerful insight into how to avoid common thinking gaps and ways to mitigate biases in planning and forecasting, I have to endorse this course. The science and studies are referenced throughout the training, bringing Project Management into the modern era of including people's behaviors, just like economics. Gain the insight to plan and forecast your projects and bring your PM skills to the next level. While I started this endeavor to boost my resume as I prepare to transition from the military, I found the training to not just expand and build upon my Project Management knowledge but also expand my knowledge in the world of behavioral sciences that go beyond just PM. The information was captivating and insightful not just into the inner working and thought processes of others but of myself. I am refreshed, relieved and more confident moving forward with the knowledge gained. Thank you Institute for Neuro & Behavioral Project Management!
Daveed Pryor, NPPQ
I am very thankful for the NeuralPlan Certification course provided.
The depth of knowledge and detailed breakdown of information demonstrated throughout the course was truly informative and has significantly increased my understanding of behavioral and neuroscience, and its impact on planning processes.
I would highly recommend to others.
